Ka La Ba Shi: Origin of La Hu Coffee
La Hu Coffee gained a score of 83.7273 and achieved sixth place in 2017 Best of Yunnan Green Coffee Competition.
Legend has it, that at the beginning of last century a French Christian missionary named Bernal arrived at a beautiful town called Nuo Fu in Lancang County with his 17-year-old son. When they first set foot on this magical land where there was an endless stretch of primitive forest and met with those pure and kind La Hu people, the two unexpectedly began to love this miracle land and the people living in there.
Bernal and his son Zanu built a church with the support and help of the La Hu ethnic group. They began to recruit believers, preach sermons and live with La Hu people. Cara, second daughter of local chieftain, was not only a loyal follower but also a great helper to Zanu and his father. As time went by, Zanu and Cara fell in love. Romantic French Zanu and pure local La Hu girl Cara planted a coffee seed together as a token of their love. Soon their pretty daughter was born. This girl brought more joy to their life. In the meantime, the coffee trees they not only grew fruit, but also spread their seeds to establish a coffee farm.
However, nothing is so certain as the unexpected. A blind opposition to foreigners swept through southwest of China and the quiet place of Nuo Fu could not escape from it. The warm-hearted La Hu people had no choice and sent Zanu and his father out of China. After that, Zanu and Cara were separated in different places. Cara would bring his daughter to the coffee farm developed by them when she missed Zanu. The little girl babbled the word coffee following her mom. People couldn’t remember the name Zanu named his daughter. But people kindly called her “coffee”. Because she was the descendent of the La Hu, they began to call her La Hu Coffee after she grew up.
